The Roads Policing Sergeant provides the first level of managing resources in roads policing, including supervising the response to road-related incidents, disrupting criminality and anti-social driving and supervising operations on the road network to prevent loss of life or injury on the roads and to prosecute offences through intelligence led policing.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide supervision to ensure that team members are inspired and motivated to perform their duties, managing their welfare and development through coaching and mentoring and promote safe working practices.
  • Manage the performance of team members and be responsible for the achievement of the team and unit objectives as specified by Force.
  • Supervise, lead, and review the primary investigation of road related incidents, gathering information and intelligence, handing over to a specialist where required, to develop initial lines of enquiry.
  • Contribute to service improvement by reviewing how procedures can be developed, providing feedback to managers on what works and what could be improved to support the continued improvement of policing.
  • Use experience and specialist knowledge to provide team members with guidance to perform their respective duties, and ensure that response is delivered within appropriate policies and legislation.
  • Manage resources to enable effective service provision, and to balance this with appropriate deployment of public funds to achieve Value for Money.
  • Supervise the control and management of incidents and investigations at the scene of fatal, serious and life altering collisions, in line with JESIP principles, making dynamic risk assessments to protect the public and to preserve evidence and life.
  • Provide expertise on drink drug driving legislation to support road safety investigation and prosecution.
  • Plan and direct community engagement activities, providing expert advice relating to road safety, to ensure that the public is informed and engaged and to contribute to the reduction of road casualties.
  • Liaise and partner with relevant agencies to enable effective collaboration in the performance of duties and in order to support organisations, groups and individuals across all communities.

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Prior Education and Experience:

  • Substantive Sergeant or have met the promotion requirements as defined in the National Police Promotion Framework (NPPF).
  • Level 4 Certificate in Police First Line Management.
  • Advanced driver and Tactical Pursuits and Containment (TPAC) training.
  • Completed relevant training in Roads Policing law and procedure.
  • Must hold a full and valid UK driving licence with any DVLA endorsements highlighted to the Head of Driving Risk.
  • Experience in responding to incidents, including major and critical incidents, and applying the National Decision Model.

Skills:

  • Able to set out logical arguments clearly, and communicate effectively adapting language, form and message to meet the needs of different people / audiences.
  • Skilled in using specialised software related to own area of work to extract, analyse and report on data.
  • Able to supervise a team and take personal accountability for creating strong engagement of individuals with their personal and team objectives and with Force values, behaviours and strategic priorities.
  • Able to manage the introduction of new business processes or ways of working at team level.
  • Able to gather and handle information and identify cause and effect, developing a course of action designed to target root causes and mitigate risk.
  • Able to review and assess individual and team performance against expected standards, providing objective and effective feedback and ensuring corrective actions are taken where necessary.
  • Able to plan ahead; to allocate work appropriately within the team and to identify and mitigate risks to delivery.
  • Able to identify key stakeholders, understand potential roles and to take appropriate steps to understand their needs and concern.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Maintain an up to date understanding of Police Regulations and College of Policing Guidance, best practice and any local policy applicable to the operational police context.
  • Maintain and update key knowledge, understanding and skills relating to criminology, legislation, policy and practice across all functional policing areas of operational policing.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of new approaches identified by evidence based policing research and problem solving, test and synthesise these into working practice, championing innovation and changes to practice.
  • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of new and evolving crime threats and priorities and current best practice to tackle these in order to enable a pro-active and preventative approach.
  • Maintain personal resilience through understanding the health and wellbeing of yourself and others.
  • Identify and share ways to enable continuous and public-focused improvement to the service.
  • Complete all annual and mandatory training.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills relating to work based assessment and conducting Performance Development Reviews.
  • Maintain competence relating to stopping, searching and seizing vehicles.
  • Maintain competence related to police driving standards and specialist driving functions.
  • Maintain awareness of the risks and safety requirements when operating on the strategic road network and other roads.
  • Maintain competence in relation to police pursuits, and their management where necessary.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of vehicle technology and enforcement devices.
  • Maintain competence in respect of Hollow Spike Tyre Deflation Systems (HoSTyDS).
  • Join relevant roads policing POLKA communities and engage in appropriate professional discussions.
  • Keep up to date with Authorised Professional Practice relevant to your core duties.
  • Maintain competence in managing the media, including the use of social media
