Digital Forensic Practitioner

The Digital Forensic Practitioner supports and advises on the delivery of digital services for major crimes, incidents, operations or any investigation that requires specialist digital forensic investigative assistance, applying a broad range of digital forensics techniques to support the investigative strategy.
This specialist technical capability ensures the appropriate capture, processing and analysis of digital evidence either within a laboratory environment or at a scene of incident or other nominated location. This role provides a specialist capability for investigations where digital technology and data acquisition opportunities exist.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide specialist technical advice and guidance to investigating officers on digital forensic opportunities, in proactive, reactive investigations and crime in action, to guide the investigation on the best course of action in the circumstances.
- Knowledge of technology and forensic science principles to identify digital forensic evidential opportunities to maximise the outcomes of the forensic strategy.
- Applies knowledge of digital forensics tools and techniques to select appropriate methods and plan for the capture, preservation, processing and analysis of digital material in both the laboratory and at scenes.
- Delivers competent and factual reports, evidential statements and continuity processes as required for the criminal justice system and force procedures and/or systems. Can distinguish between factual and evaluative opinion evidence.
- Operate in a safe, lawful manner and ethical manner when dealing with digital devices and information and giving due consideration to wellbeing working practices when processing sensitive or potentially distressing content.
- Working to organisational procedures and processes and undertakes technical quality checks, peer and procedural reviews for digital forensic ‘end to end’ workflows.
- Conducts independent field work and technical problem solving within an agreed forensic strategy.

Prior Education and Experience:
- A relevant technical degree or equivalent experience in a digital forensic environment.
- Detailed technical knowledge of digital forensic services
- Understanding of law enforcement and the Criminal Justice System.
- Knowledge and understanding of operating with an accredited environment
- Proven experience on a broad range of digital forensic investigations.
Skills:
- Able to deliver analysis of digital devices.
- Competent in analysing a problem, breaking it down into component parts, interpreting large quantities of numerical data and determining and implementing the appropriate action.
- Have knowledge and understanding of the rules and requirements of evidence gathering and its presentation at court.
- Able to operate digital forensic equipment safely and in appropriate manner.
- A broad knowledge of digital technology and the forensic opportunities offered by their examination.
- Ability to communicate and explain digital and technical information accurately and appropriate to the audience.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Maintain a current and up to date knowledge and appreciation of the changing digital forensic landscape and how it is employed in criminality.
- Keep knowledge on relevant legislation and national policy/guidance current.
- Research and employ best practice techniques to enhance police service delivery.
- Horizon scanning for new approaches to evidence based policing.
- Seek opportunities to improve upon the delivery of professional/expert witness evidence testimony.
- Scan for emerging technologies and how best to incorporate them into professional practice.
- Seek out and undertake meaningful training/attachment opportunities to enhance skills base and service delivery.
