Role Purpose

Oversee all pre-dive and in-dive checks to ensure they are carried out on both the equipment and the diver, monitor the condition of the diver and equipment throughout the operation to ensure the safety and security of the diver at all times while in the water and to report this to the Dive Supervisor.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee the diver’s preparations to ensure that all pre-dive equipment checks are completed prior to entry to the water, reporting to the Dive Supervisor that the diver is ready to enter the water to ensure the safety of the diver.
  • Carry out in-water checks of the diver’s equipment and reporting to the Dive Supervisor that the diver is ready to leave the surface to ensure the safety of the diver.
  • Ensure that the lifeline is securely attached to the diver before entering the water and make fast your end of the line wherever practicable to ensure the safety of the diver in line with statutory regulations and force policies.
  • Monitor the lifeline continuously, ensuring contact is maintained at all times, so that the diver can be felt but is not inconvenienced to ensure that they are able to undertake the operation safely and in line with statutory regulations and force policies.
  • Monitor the diver by periodically signalling to check their condition, reporting immediately all signals made to and received from the diver, or any matters pertinent to the diver’s safety, to the Dive Supervisor to ensure the operation operates in compliance with statutory regulations and force policies.

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Prior Education and Experience:

  • Be a qualified Police Diver or have undergone training that satisfies the Police Dive Contractor and Police Dive Supervisor.
  • Hold an in date first aid certificate.
  • Have no period of police diving inactivity greater than 90 days.

Skills:

  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen to others.
  • Able to break down a straightforward problem into component parts and determine appropriate action.
  • Able to interpret and apply guidance to a specific activity ,
  • Able to work effectively in a team to achieve shared objectives, demonstrating awareness of individual differences and providing support as required.
  • Able to review own performance objectively and to take steps to maintain and enhance competence and professional standards appropriate to the role.
  • Able to proactively develop effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Maintain currency of College of Policing Guidance, best practice and any local policy applicable to the operational police context and leading and managing teams.
  • Maintain and update key knowledge, understanding and skills relating to legislation policy and practice across all functional policing areas of operational responsibility.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of new approaches identified by evidence based policing research and problem solving and team working and synthesise these into working practice.
  • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of new and evolving crime threats and priorities; and current best practice to tackle these in order to enable a pro-active and preventative approach.
  • Complete all annual and mandatory training including for example, fitness tests, personal safety training, first aid, and protecting information.
