This MSc Leadership and Management programme is work-based and draws on your already significant management and leadership experiences to further explore leadership and management practices culminating in a 10,000 word dissertation.
It is a self-directed course supported by an individual academic supervisor, so you’ll be able to tailor your studies and chosen research topic / subject to fit your professional and personal goals.
You’ll also be able to continue to work while you study, so you’ll be able to apply what you’ve learnt within your current workplace, improving your performance in positions of leadership and authority. Course participation provides an opportunity for students to step away from those often-intense day-to-day pressures to reflect, apply critically thinking on methods, approaches and behaviours, how they work within an organisations providing an opportunity for the student to contribute to the advancement of Policing.
The chosen topic(s) often supports the forward development of Policing in the 21st Century whilst combining a recognised professional qualification for the student reflecting positively on the professional perception of senior management within a force.
The Master’s qualification is awarded after the successful completion of a 2000 word Research Proposal followed by a 10,000 word dissertation. The course is 12 months in duration.
MSc Leadership and Management
Through this course, students are expected to write a dissertation through:
- Critically evaluate published and unpublished research reports taking into account the characteristics and implications of cross-disciplinary research, highlighting strengths and opportunities for improvement.
- Explain the major aspects of data collection methods and justify their use in a specific research context.
- Use and interpret statistical concepts and methods
MSc Leadership and Management (part time)
This three year programme is aimed at managers with substantial organisational experience and at least 3 years in a managerial capacity. This may involve leadership of projects, people or resources. It is particularly suitable for professionals and technical specialists with a first degree in another discipline looking to move or establish themselves into senior leadership roles. The programme will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to deliver long term organisational performance in a range of organisational contexts. The programme provides organisational excellence in strategic leadership, financial decision-making, innovation and change, leading and developing people and collaborative relationships. Modules adopt a work-based learning philosophy and enable participants to solve real world challenges though work assignments and action learning approaches.
Learning will include a range of learning delivery opportunities including block study, day release and work-based learning. Whilst timely face to face contact will be essential the learning and teaching materials will be available via a virtual classroom and accessible to all remotely. The manager and their workplace mentor will be supported by university staff throughout the programme.
There is also the opportunity to develop a customised strategic leadership programme for a large organisation or group of employers. This would enable us to contextualise the content, and offer a more flexible approach to programme design and delivery, to meet the specific needs of your organisation
MSc Policing and Criminal Investigation
This professional course supports students as they complete a dissertation on a policing topic with each student having access to a personal expert supervisor. There is a taught element with the emphasis on investigation. It also provides methodological/research teaching and advice on reflective practice.
MSc Policing and Cybercrime
This professional course supports students as they complete a dissertation on a policing topic with each student having access to a personal expert supervisor. There is a taught element with the emphasis on cybercrime. It also provides methodological/research teaching and advice on reflective practice.
MSc Policing and Law Enforcement (PALE) Leadership
The overall aim of the programme is to explore the current and future strategic challenges facing PALE leaders and to further develop leadership styles that emphasise clarity of thinking, flexibility of approach and adaptability in addressing the often competing demands of our diverse communities.
MSc Professional Practice (Early Action)
This course has been developed collaboratively by practitioners and academics to enhance the knowledge, understanding and skills to work effectively with multi-agency teams, whether from a statutory organisation or voluntary sector. The course is aimed at personal and professional development for current professionals in the field of multi-agency partnership working. It is taught using a combination of lectures, practicals and self-directed study to understand the complexity of relationships, pressure and incentives within a multi-agency partnership.
MSc Strategic Policing
Our MSc course is ideal for police officers and staff wanting to enhance their development at Masters level, as it was developed in consultation with partner forces to ensure its relevance to contemporary police work. The programme strongly aligns itself to the ethos of the PEQF and qualifications within it. We provide a flexible online learning system that allows you to study around your work commitments, supported by workshops at our campuses in Carlisle or London.
Our fantastic range of modules ensures that the course is kept in line with your career aspirations, allowing you to choose topics that relate to your specialisms. You will have the chance to engage with officers from other areas and share ideas and practice, improving your own skills and knowledge whilst helping others do the same.
